Toppled Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak received a successful leg surgery after he fell down and broke the top of his left thigh bone Thursday night, but his general health condition is still critical, his lawyer Farid al- Deeb told Xinhua on Friday.
"Mubarak fell down on his way to the bathroom and fractured the top of his left thigh bone severely," al-Deeb said, adding that " the surgery lasted for three hours and he could recognize me and talk to me now."
The 86-year-old ex-president, who was ousted following mass protests in early 2011, is currently detained in Maadi Military Hospital while facing several trials over responsibility for killing protesters and corruption charges.
On May 21, Mubarak was sentenced to three years in prison and his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, were sentenced to four years, as they, along with other four of Mubarak's aides, were charged with misappropriating 100 million Egyptian pounds (14 million U.S. dollars) of funds intended to refurbish the presidential palace.
The Mubaraks were also fined 125 million pounds (nearly 17.5 million dollars) and were ordered to pay 21 million pounds (about 2.9 million dollars) to the state treasury.
"I will appeal this verdict," the lawyer said, stressing that he is currently more concerned about Mubarak's health.
"Besides the recent fracture, the man is suffering from heart, kidney and liver problems," he said.
Meanwhile, al-Deeb appreciated that the authorities have dealt with Mubarak's accident mercifully, adding that the government has also offered to transfer him to the military's International Medical Center if necessary.
"But senior medical experts preferred not to move the old man in that critical condition," he said.
He added that the Interior Ministry has approved the appeal of Mubarak's two sons to visit their father in hospital from the prison on Thursday.
