Catalan lawmakers met Friday in the region's parliament to debate a motion on declaring independence from Spain, just as Madrid was poised to impose direct rule on the region to stop it in its tracks.

"The session is open," the parliament speaker said, before giving way to an opposition lawmaker, Carlos Carrizosa, who brandishing the motion said: "This text you have drafted destroys what we hold most sacred, living together in harmony."
