Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro hailed his socialist government's "emphatic victory" in closely watched regional elections on Sunday, after official results gave it control of 17 of the 23 states.

"The opposition has five," Maduro underscored in a speech after the results were announced, adding that his party could still win one state where the results were in dispute.
