Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny said on Twitter on Friday that he had been detained by police as he left his home in Moscow.

"They have detained me in my building's entrance hall. They are taking me somewhere 'to give explanations,'" Navalny said. He had been set to travel to the provincial city of Nizhny Novgorod to hold a rally.
