US President Donald Trump spoke to Qatar's emir on Wednesday, a US official told AFP, amid a crisis that has split US allies and pushed regional powers toward confrontation.

The official said the US president had spoken to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, a day after Trump appeared to back a Saudi-led blockade of his emirate.
