Sharjah Children's Reading Festival

Sharjah Children's Reading Festival organized a literature evening with Egyptian writer, Nabil Farouk, and sci-fi literature writer, Noura Al Noman, founder of the first Emirati publishing house, specialized in sci-fi and fancy, and it was hosted by Dina Kandil. They discussed the regulations to create alternative worlds filled with advanced scientific inventions.

Noura Al Nouman said that, in the past there were a lot of sci-fi magazines like, Five Adventurers, Superman, Spiderman and others, but these magazines, which influenced the imagination of an entire generation were no longer published, and the reason is unknown.

She added that, the absence of such genre in our Arabic world had a bad effect on children and young people, as they lost interest in innovation and creativity. This made her start writing sci-fi literature in 2010, and the first publishing house specialized in such books was published in 2016 under the name “Manuscript 5229”.

Nabil Farouk said that, there is huge difference between fancy and sci-fi, confirming that, sci-fi requires a solid scientific base, and it has already suggested a lot of scientific phenomena, which science was able to create, like tablets, military submarines and others.

He added that, self-control is the boundary in such genre, saying that this particular type of genre is facing some challenges like, the absence of Arabic content, attempt to write without any solid information.
