As many as 2,500 refugees, mainly Syrians, arrived to Austria via the Hungarian borders on Friday, an Austrian police official said.

The refugees entered Austria on foot after being transported via the Hungarian authorities by train, he said.

The refugees were distributed to four places to spend the night before being transferred to Austria, the official added.
