South Africa’s Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma became Monday the first woman to assume the presidency of the African Union Commission. Zuma is the ex-wife of South African President Jacob Zuma. She was also South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs. Zuma became the Head of the AU after she beat Jean Ping of Gabon, in elections that were held in July. She pledged to address a number of political and security issues in the continent; mainly the conflict in Mali, the political transition in Somalia the unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
