UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom to lead UN investigation into the allegations that chemical weapons had been used in Syria. Martin Nesirky, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said that Sellstrom was still a project manager on chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and on explosive substance at a research institute. Nesirky said Sellstrom was a scientist with a solid background in disarmament and international security, adding that he worked as a lecturer at US universities, the director of the Swedish Institute for Defense and Security Studies (FOI) and as a consultant for the UN. UN Secretary-General Ban has announced his decision to launch an investigation into a possible use of chemical weapons in Syria last week.
