Arab League chief Nabil el Araby on Monday welcomed the Vatican's recognition of the Palestinian state.

"This recognition will support the legitimate rights of the Palestinians," Araby said in a statement.

"We are hoping other nations follow suit," he said.

The recent Vatican announcement that it will soon sign a comprehensive treaty to recognize Palestine as a state is seen as an important development and signals a shift in policy for the Holy See.
