UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Thursday hailed the role of volunteers in creating peace and stability around the globe. "Founded on the values of solidarity and mutual trust, volunteerism transcends all cultural, linguistic and geographic boundaries. By giving their time and skills without expectation of material reward, volunteers themselves are uplifted by a singular sense of purpose," UN News Center quoted Ban as saying in his message for the International Volunteer Day. The United Nations International Volunteer Day (UN-IVD) is observed on December 5 of every year. On this day, millions of people volunteer their time and skills to help make the world a better place. They help to improve the lives of others and, at the same time gain a sense of community belonging.
