China's Foreign Ministry on Friday confirmed that a hostage taken by Daesh terrorist group in Syria was a Chinese citizen.
"Preliminary information shows that one of the two hostages as relevant media revealed matches the characteristics of a Chinese citizen who has gone missing overseas," Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei said in his regular press conference.
"Upon learning that, competent authorities of the Chinese government have launched an emergency response mechanism," he added.
The spokesman said that his country reiterated its firm opposition to any violence against innocent civilians.
The terrorist group on Wednesday posted photos of two men wearing yellow prison clothing on its online magazine Dabiq.
The magazine referred to the Chinese man as Fan Jinghui, 50, from Beijing. The other was identified Norwegian Ole Johan Grimsgaard-Ofstad, 48.
