Bounnhang Vorachit was on Friday elected to the position of Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP).

He was elected by the 10th Party Central Committee of the LPRP, which announced the result on Friday afternoon during the last working day of the 10th National Congress of the LPRP in the Lao capital Vientiane.

Bounnhang replaces outgoing Secretary-General Choummaly Sayasone who served as LPRP Secretary-General of LPRP for 10 years (2006-2016).
