Bulgaria will conduct negotiations with a Japanese strategic investor for the construction of a 1,000 MW nuclear power unit, it was announced Wednesday. The government said negotiations will be held with Toshiba Corporation, and the new unit based in the only Bulgarian nuclear power plant Kozloduy. New technology would be used to to address safety issues, the statement added. Kozloduy has six Soviet-made reactors in total but only two of them, 1,000 MW each, are in operation. The other four 440-MW units were shut down in 2002 and 2006 as one of the conditions for Bulgaria's accession to the European Union.
