British Prime Minister David Cameron welcomed on Friday the signing of the political agreement among Libyan factions in the Moroccan city of Skhirat.

"This outcome is an important step forward, paving the way for a new unified national government in Libya," Cameron said in a statement released by his office.

"The UK is firmly committed to securing a stable and prosperous future for Libya. We’ve led international efforts in support of the UN talks resulting in that agreement," he added.

"Importantly, this agreement means the international community can now engage with one unified, representative government in Libya in the fight against Daesh and the migrant traffickers," Cameron said.

"I look forward to working closely with Prime Minister Serraj as the new government works to bring peace and stability to all Libyans," according to the British prime minister.

For his part, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has welcomed the signature of the Libyan Political Agreement by a majority of the Libyan negotiating parties at a ceremony in Skhirat, Morocco.

"The Agreement is the culmination of over a year of complex negotiations between the various Libyan parties, facilitated by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Martin Kobler," Hammond added.

"To ensure a lasting peace in Libya, all parties must maintain this momentum to create a Government of National Accord based in Tripoli. I also urge those who have not yet signed, to support this agreement," Hammond underlined.

"The UK Government stands ready to work to help deliver a stable and prosperous future for all Libyan citizens, and to tackle the threat from Daesh and criminal gangs who have contributed to the migration crisis in the Mediterranean," according to Hammond.
