Cuba backs Egypt's nomination to a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Cuban Ambassador to Egypt Laureano Rodriguez Castro told MENA.

Cuba is the second Latin American country after Ecuador to announce supporting Egypt's accession to the UNSC. More than 80 countries have announced support for Egypt.

The ambassador said African and other UN countries back Egypt's accession to the UNSC in view of its ancient history and culture, its defense of several just causes, topped by the Palestinian cause, its role in combating international terror and its commitment to international law and the UN Charter.

Meanwhile, he noted that economic ventures in Egypt would open new vistas in the region, adding that his country is passing through the same stage of economic expansion.

He said Egypt and Cuba can exchange expertise in several domains, including biotechnology, education, medicine and pharmaceuticals.

Concerning the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the envoy regretted halting the Palestinian-Israeli talks, rejecting the provocative and illegal Israeli measures represented in establishing new settlements on the occupied Palestinian lands.

He added that Cuba backs the Palestinians' struggle until restoring their rights and establishing an independent state with al-Quds as its capital.
