Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met Wednesday with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to discuss the latest developments in Libya.
Talks focused on the spread of terrorist organizations in Libya amid inability of the government to take control there, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Badr Abdel Aati said.
Shoukry told Ban that the UN Security Council should live up to its responsibilities in empowering the legitimate government of Libya to be able to fight terrorism and restore stability there, Abdel Aati said.
Shoukry also stressed the need for the UNSC to support measures to stop weapons from falling into the hands of armed gangs and terrorists, he added.
They also discussed Egyptian efforts to counter terrorism, the spokesman said.
Shoukry and Ban also talked about supporting regional efforts to reach a UN-brokered political solution to the crisis in Libya, Abdel Aati added.
Libyan parties that renounce violence and terrorism should take part in hammering out such political solution, he noted.
The spokesman said that Shoukry also met with permanent and non-permanent members of the UNSC, as well as the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain.
Abdel Aati touched upon non-stop coordination with Jordan and non-permanent Arab members of the UNSC to prepare for an extra-ordinary session on Libya to start at 3.00 p.m., New York time.
The UNSC will first listen to a statement by Bernardino Leon, the UN envoy to Libya, then a statement by Foreign Minister Shoukry and a third by Libya's top diplomat al Sayyed Mohamed al Dayari, the spokesman said, adding that an in-camera session will then follow.
