EU foreign ministers began an extraordinary meeting here this afternoon to discus the deteriorating situation in Ukraine.EU High Representative Catherine Ashton told reporters ahead of the meeting that "as I was at the Iran talks I convened this Foreign Affairs Council to consider the terrible situation that is happening in Ukraine." "I also asked three foreign ministers, Minister Steinmeier, Minister Fabius and Minister Sikorski to go on behalf of myself and the EU to Kiev, I have spoken to them twice in the last couple of hours, they have had a number of meetings and are currently on further discussions and I will be reporting to the Council on what they have said," she noted. On his part, British foreign secretary William Hague said "the latest scenes and events in Kiev including the killing of more protesters as we heard about this morning is utterly unacceptable and indefensible."We are going to discuss about the sanctions, their scope and how we will define them. It is important that there is a strong international response, it is also important we promote ultimately a peaceful settlement of these issues and retain our capability to do so," he added.
