The European Union expressed Thursday its support for the Egyptian people and government in efforts to combat terrorism.

In a statement, distributed by the EU commission in Cairo, the EU reaffirmed "The EU stands firmly with the Government and people of Egypt in confronting terrorism," and hoped a speedy recovery for the injured after a massive car bomb explosion Thursday.

"We hope for their speedy recovery and express our support to the Egyptian people who continue to face the dire consequences of terrorism in their country," the statement read.

In the wee hours of Thursday, a huge explosion rocked outside the national security branch of Shubra el Kheima, Qalyoubiya governorate, when a booby trapped car exploded outside the four-storey building. Many nearby buildings were damaged.

Health conditions of the injured are stable, according to the Health Ministry and no fatalities were reported.

A number of injured people were discharged from Nile Hospital after receiving medical treatment while six police personnel were moved to Police Hospital in Agouza.
