The EU has expressed deep concern about the violence that has erupted in South Sudan, and in particular about reports of extra-judicial killings on an ethnic basis. "This escalation of violence puts into jeopardy the unity of the country. If not contained, it could lead to civil strife and destroy the hopes of the South Sudanese people for a peaceful future and improved living conditions," said a statement released by the EU diplomatic mission in South Sudan. The statement voiced EU opposition to any attempt to overthrow a democratically elected government by force. It encouraged South Sudan's political leaders to initiate a dialogue with a view to resolving their differences peacefully and within the framework of the interim Constitution. It encouraged the Government of South Sudan to make a gesture of goodwill by immediately releasing all arrested politicians who are not involved in the ongoing fighting, so that they can effectively participate in the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
