A fire that broke out at a furniture plant here early last Sunday proved to be hard to extinguish as firemen were still battling the blaze on Monday, a representative of the Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service said.

The fire service's representative Inta Saboha said that on Monday afternoon a fire engine and seven firemen continued to work at the scene of the fire accident.

After the fire crew had struggled for hours to contain the flames, they decided to leave the building and tackle the flames from the outside as it had become too hot and smoky to stay inside the burning furniture plant, Saboha said.

One firefighter sustained an injury to his leg during the rescue work.
