France welcomed on Tuesday a UN Resolution in the Security Council threatening sanctions against individuals blocking progress toward peace and the electoral process in the conflict-torn Central African Republic (CAR). Resolution 2134 will bolster French and African efforts to end ethnic and sectarian violence that has taken tens of thousands of lives over several months and has seen France bolster its military deployment in CAR from 400 to 1,600 but still not enough to stem the violence. There is also an international African force operating in the country and trying to disarm militias. Resolution 2134 also authorises the deployment of European Union forces to help France in the CAR.
