The US transferred a prisoner from the US detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to Morocco.
The Pentagon announced the transfer of Moroccan citizen Younis Abdurrahman Chekkouri, 47, to Morocco, leaving 115 prisoners in the Guantanamo facility.
The remaining detainees include 52 who are eligible for transfer, most of them Yemenis who can’t be repatriated given the instability in Yemen, and will have to be transferred to other countries.
“The United States is grateful to the Government of Morocco for its willingness to support ongoing US efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility,” Pentagon spokesman Cmdr. Gary Ross said.
“The United States coordinated with the Government of Morocco to ensure this transfer took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures.”
