Iceland's centre-right government has dropped its application to join the European Union amid dwindling support for the28-member club, dpa reported.
The decision prompted several hundred people to gather outside parliament in protest after it was announced late on Thursday.
As of Friday afternoon, about 2,400 people had signed up on a Facebook page to join a protest march planned for the weekend.
A formal letter informing Brussels of the decision was delivered to Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, during talks in Iceland with Foreign Minister Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson.
