Voters in Indian capital New Delhi were casting ballots Saturday in local elections seen as a test of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity.
The main contest is between Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the anti-corruption Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
BJP's candidate for chief minister is Kiran Bedi, India'a first female police officer. Opinion polls showed her trailing behind AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal whose party would secure a 36-seat majority.
The city's 70 legislative assembly seats are up for election.
More than 13 million voters were eligible to vote in the contests involving 673 candidates. A total of 11,763 polling booths have been set up across Delhi, according to the Election Commission.
Modi's party scored a landmark victory in the national elections and has won key state elections in recent months.
More than 50,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to ensure peaceful voting in the city.
Ballots are to be counted on Tuesday and results will be declared the same day.
