Israeli Magistrate Court in Jerusalem Thursday sentenced striking prisoner Samer Issawi, from East Jerusalem, to eight months in jail that starts from the day of his arrest on July 7. Issawi, who has been on hunger strike for 214 consecutive days, was charged of breaking the terms of his release in the latest prisoners’ swap deal back in 2011 by entering an area in the West Bank. Even though Issawi should practically be released on March 6, he will not because he still has a military court hearing pending. He will appear in Ofer military court on March 21 for the same charge. A protest outside the courthouse was suppressed by Israeli police and three of the protesters were arrested.
