Israeli soldiers shot and fatally wounded a Palestinian man at a checkpoint east of the city of Tulkarem in the northern West Bank, Palestinian sources said. They said an army jeep rammed the car of 38-year-old Hatem Shadid after troops chased him at the Beit Leed intersection on suspicion he had an axe and shot him. The sources said troops blocked a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance from taking the body which was moved by an Israeli ambulance to an undisclosed location. Soldiers sealed off the main Tulkarem-Nablus road and halted traffic as mounted and foot patrols were deployed and in the area and began a search.
