Millions of Israelis are casting their votes to determine their country's next Prime Minister and the make-up of its parliament, according to CNN.
Polls opened Tuesday at 7 a.m. local time (1 a.m. ET) and will close at 10 p.m.
The 5,883,365 Israelis registered to vote can do so in one of 10,119 locations, of which 2,500 have wheelchair access. Unlike in the US and Britain, Israelis serving a custodial sentence are allowed to vote, and 56 ballot boxes have been set up in 27 different prisons around the country. Another 255 ballot boxes have been set up in hospitals around Israel.
Ballots are for political parties rather than individual candidates. Israel has a proportional representation system, meaning a coalition government is likely to be formed within its 120-seat Knesset, or parliament.
The next Prime Minister will have to tackle international and domestic crises, including security, foreign relations, the Palestinian question and rising concerns about the high cost of living in Israel.
