Jordanian authorities said Sunday that the country has received 5,434 Syrian refugees in the past 48 hours, most of them elderly, women, and children as well as 35 wounded, who are fleeing armed conflict in Syria ongoing since March 2011. A Jordanian border security official said that the refugees crossed through various border points along the 370 km borderline. Border guards are receiving refugees and offering them various forms of humanitarian support and medical service, and arranging their transfer to the refugee camps set for this purpose. The number of Syrian refugees in Jordan now stands at nearly 1,000,000 people, half of those have fled teh fighting in Syria, according to Jordanian official data.
