US Secretary of State John Kerry has scheduled a last-minute meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif late Friday at the United Nations, a US official said.

The meeting was announced for 5:00 pm (2100 GMT), just ahead of Kerry's departure for Washington after a week of intense diplomacy on the Syria crisis.

The US official declined to give details, but the two countries have held discussions about implementing the historic nuclear deal and the way forward in Syria to end the four-year war.
