North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly claimed his scientists have developed a hydrogen bomb.

If true, it would signal a major advance in the country's nuclear weapons capabilities, Fox News reported on Thursday.

Kim said his family "turned the DPRK into a powerful nuclear weapons state ready to detonate a self-reliant A-bomb and H-bomb to reliably defend its sovereignty and the dignity of the nation".

South Korea's intelligence agency said there was no evidence the North had hydrogen bomb technology.
