The General Anti-Corruption Authority is marking the International Anti-Corruption Day, observed globally on December 9, with a semiar on the theme, "Countering Corruption: Shared Responsibility" held under the sponsorship of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The event is held in cooperation with Kuwait Transparency Society. The press statement announcing the event said the program starts with a speech by His Highness the Amir's representative to the event, Minister of Justice and Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, to be followed by a speech by the Authority Chairman Chief Justice Abdulrahman Al-Nemesh, and there would also be a speech by the National Assembly Legislative Committee MP Mubarak Al-Hurais, along with speeches by Chairman of the Kuwait Transparency Society Salah Al-Ghazali and representative for the private sector Manaf Al-Hajri. The authority urged all state and civil community institutions, as well as individuals, to attend or be represented at the seminar, to be held Monday morning at the Jumeirah Hotel. On October 31, 2003, the UN General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and requested that the Secretary-General designate the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as secretariat for the Convention's Conference of States Parties. The Assembly also designated December 9 as "International Anti-Corruption Day", to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the convention in combating and preventing it. The convention entered into force in December 2005.
