NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has strongly urged the Ukrainian government to refrain from further violence. "If the military intervenes against the opposition, Ukraine's ties with NATO will be seriously damaged," he warned in a brief statement. In the past Ukraine was aspiring to join NATO but the current Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in 2010 decided to keep his country out of the Alliance.
