US President Barack Obama has nominated Daniel Rubinstein, envoy for Syria, as the next US ambassador to Tunisia, the White House said in statement on Tuesday.

Daniel H. Rubinstein, a career member of the Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as the Special Envoy for Syria in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, a position he has held since 2014, according to the White House.

Previously, Rubinstein served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research from 2012 to 2014. Prior to that, he was Consul-General at the US Consulate General in Jerusalem from 2009 to 2012, Chief of the Civilian Observer Unit for the Multinational Force and Observers in Sinai, Egypt from 2008 to 2009, and Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Amman, Jordan from 2005 to 2008.

He also served as Director of the Office of Israel and Palestinian Affairs from 2004 to 2005, Science Counselor at the US Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil from 2002 to 2004, and Economic Section Chief at the US Embassy in Damascus, Syria from 1999 to 2002.

His earlier assignments with the Department of State include postings in Angola, Israel, and Tunisia. Rubinstein received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley
