The Pentagon said Friday it has sent a prisoner from the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, home to Kuwait, part of a push to whittle the prison’s population down to 90 this month, The Wall Street Journal‎ reported.

The detainee, Faez Mohammed Ahmed Al-Kandari, was cleared for transfer in September 2015 by a board with representatives from six federal agencies.

Kuwaiti Ambassador to the US Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said that a Kuwaiti security team has received the last remaining Kuwaiti detainee at Guantanamo, Fayez Al-Kanderi, who is now on the way home.

He added that the decision to set Al-Kanderi free embodied the elevated directives by His Highness the Amir, and his keenness during contacts with former US president George W. Bush and current Barack Obama, on closing that file.

Kanderi transfer follows that of two Yemeni prisoners to Ghana earlier this week and the prison’s population is now 104, including 45 detainees approved for transfer if security conditions can be met.
