The Public Prosecution referred on Sunday a policeman to the Criminal Court over charges of killing a driver in the working-class district of Darb Al Ahmar.
Police sergeant Moustafa Mahmoud Abdel Hakim took his gun out of its holster on Thursday and shot the driver after a heated argument over the fare.
The prosecution took the decision after listening to testimonies of a number of eyewitnesses and a confession of the defendant himself.
Later on Thursday, hundreds of people converged outside Cairo security directorate to protest the death.
