Pope Francis has called for an end to the conflicts in the Middle East.

This came in statements after a meeting with Palestinian nuns who attended the canonization of two Palestinian nuns of the 19th century.

On the sidelines, Pope Francis praised Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as an "angel of peace."

Abbas attended the canonization Sunday of Mariam Bawardy and Marie Alphonsine Ghattas in St. Peter's Square.
