Doha - KUNA
Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem Al Thani urged the Lebanese government to bar the Lebanese parties from intervening in the armed conflict in neighboring Syria. Addressing the opening session of the meeting of the Friends of Syria group on Saturday, Sheikh Hamad said: \"The Syrian regime would not have kept going with its bloody policy, and maneuvering and stalling approach at complete ease in relation to any peaceful settlement for the conflict without the assistance and support it still receives from known regional and international forces.\" \"The clearest proof to this is the intervention of Lebanon\'s Hezbollah,\" Qatar News Agency (QNA) quoted him as saying. Sheikh Hamad leads Qatar\'s delegation to the ministerial meeting which brought together representatives of key members of the Group including UK Foreign Secretary William Hague and US Secretary of State John Kerry. On the reported use by the Syrian regime of chemical weapons, Sheikh Hamad said: \"It is shocking to hear the news and proofs about the regime\'s use of these weapons against its people. No doubt you are following the development of the tragic events taking place in the Syrian arena.\" \"The bloodbath dictated by the regime is continuing; the number of deaths and innocent victims is increasing every day; and the large scale destruction has become an undeniable fact beside the humanitarian calamity that has befallen the Syrian people who has largely become either internally displaced or refugees in neighboring and other countries. \"All the Arab and international efforts to end the Syrian tragedy failed, rendering the international community a helpless observer that cannot deal with the situation,\" he went on. Sheikh Hamad stressed that the provision and use of arms might be the only way to achieve peace especially in the Syrian case, noting that as such, \"moral support alone shall not be enough.\" \"We have to provide all kinds of support to the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces and the Supreme Military Council until they become capable of confronting the regime\'s forces and the regional and international powers supporting it,\" he said. Sheikh Hamad noted that it is very important to make it clear to everyone that our call to provide support to the Syrian opposition and its military council springs from humanitarian objectives, as such support has become essential after the regime has spoiled through its well-known procrastination and maneuvers all the sincere efforts to bring about a peaceful solution though which to protect Syria and reach the legitimate aspirations of its people. \"We are not against dialogue and peaceful settlement; and definitely we support the convention of Geneva II conference to bring about a peaceful transfer of power in Syria through the formation of a fully authorized transitional government in which Bashar Al Assad and his associates whose hands were stained with blood cannot participate,\" he remarked. \"We announce this notwithstanding the regime will do its utmost to prevent the convention of such conference or thwart it if it is held, because what this regime is truly concerned with is not a peaceful transfer of power and an end to the tragedy, but continued scramble for power even if that is at the cost of a million deaths and millions of internally displaced people and refugees and destroying and partitioning Syria. \"I would like to share with you the ideas that have been revolving in my mind as we pass through what I think a historic juncture. No doubt we work in our positions of responsibility to express the interests of our countries through the resolutions that we adopt at the level of international relations. \"However, this should not make us ignore the judgment of history with regard to the legacy that we are going to leave for the future generations in our countries and worldwide,\" the Qatari Premier underlined. Concluding his speech, Sheikh Hamad said: \"Here is where the challenge we are facing lies. Are we ready to accept this challenge for the sake of humanity and the peoples of the world? I sincerely hope that we are.\" Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry said the military support his country offers to the Syrian opposition aimed to address the imbalance on the ground between the Syrian regime and its opposition. \"Arming the Syrian opposition was done to enhance the chances of a political solution, rather than look for a military one,\" he argued. \"The United States and other countries here - in their various ways, each choosing its own approach - will increase the scope and scale of assistance to the political and military opposition,\" Kerry affirmed. The arms supplies to the opposition could help stop Al Assad from relying on Iranian and Hezbollah fighters in combats in Syria, he went on. Kerry stressed that the final document of Geneva I was the guideline for a political solution in Syria, voicing hope that the international community can reach a breakthrough in Syria that leads to a political solution.
