The court announced this after hearing today the defence of the defendant. The Court is retrying him in accordance with the law that stipulates defendants convicted in absentia must be retried once arrested to provide them with opportunity of self-defence. The pediatrician is charged with giving a false medication report issued by Khalifa Hospital in which he incorrectly stated a girl with Leukaemia was given platelets. He is also charged with manslaughter by not giving the girl the required platelets at time which led to her death. At the time, Karabus run away from the UAE after the deterioration of the girl’s health and before her death. He also absconded from the hospital two weeks before the expiry date of his employment contract. He was tried in absentia and found guilty. The court punished him with three years in jail for issuing false report in addition to one year in jail and Dh 100,000 in blood money for the girl’s heirs.
