Russia will continue its efforts in various formats to promote United Nations’ measures to restore peace in Libya, the Russian foreign ministry said on Monday after the Libyan parties initialed the Skhirat agreement reached as a result of the United Nations-brokered intra-Libyan agreement.

"The document provides for conditions for stopping the intra-Libyan conflict, forming a national unity government and other central state power bodies, and measures to deescalate violence and ensure stability, law and order in the country," the ministry said, adding that these provisions had been agreed by the parties to the conflict.

"Moscow commends this document as a step needed to promote the political process in Libya," the ministry stressed. "We are confident that a national consensus about the future of united, sovereign and territorially integral Libya is in the interests of all of its citizens without exclusion. We proceed from the fact full implementation of the agreement signed in Skhirat will bring security and tranquility to Libya and will bolster stability in the entire region."

The agreement on peace and reconciliation was signed in the Moroccan city of Skhirat on Sunday by envoys of the internationally recognized interim government in Tobruk, representatives of a number of regional municipalities, Libya’s leading political parties and civil society organizations. The signing ceremony was ignored by delegates of the Tripoli-based pro-Islamic General National Congress (Libya’s former parliament).
