The UN Security Council on Wednesday strongly condemned an attack on peacekeepers in Darfur, which left four Nigerian peacekeepers killed and eight others injured. In a press statement, the members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of the peacekeepers killed in the attack, as well as to the government of Nigeria. Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a United Nations-African Union Mission (UNAMID) patrol late Tuesday about 2 km away from their base in El Geneina town, the capital of West Darfur State, said a statement issued by UNAMID. Four members of the Nigerian battalion were killed and eight others injured. The reason behind the ambush is unknown, said UNAMID. "The (Security) Council called on the government of Sudan to swiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice," said the press statement. "It reiterated their full support for UNAMID and called on all parties in Darfur to cooperate with the mission."
