United nations general assembly

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) approved on Tuesday a decision to grant the Union for the Mediterranean the observer status.

The decision came in response to a request from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (the union participant president) under the auspices of union member states, said a statement by the general secretariat of the union.

It said the step is considered a recognition of the role of the union in promoting cooperation and integration in the Mediterranean region.
