Commander of the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon Maj Gen Paolo Serra expressed commitment of his force to bolster parties confronting an end to hostility and reinforcing mutual respect based on UN resolution 1701. Serra expressed, in a statement, thanks to Lebanese army for their support and sustained cooperation with UNIFIL, noting as well on his appreciation to Lebanese authorities, representatives of religious leaders, and people in southern Lebanon for the constant support to enhance relations with UNIFIL in every way possible. Serra, expressed his relieve and admiration for the relatively calm period in the south, despite the recent tensions in recent days in the region. UNIFIL is operating in Lebanon under Security resolution 1701 which put an end to 34 days of Israeli aggression on Lebanon during the summer of 2006. The peacekeeping force holds around 12,000 soldiers, commanded by Maj Gen Paolo Serra of Italy, while around 15,000 Lebanese soldiers are deployed south of the country to ensure safety and security there.
