US Attorney General Loretta Lynch

The US Department of Justice said Friday it will investigate the Baltimore police department for broad civil rights violations in its law enforcement tactics to determine whether they reflected any discrimination.

In a statement released to the press today, US Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced the decision Friday, saying it would specifically look into whether officers engaged in patterns or regular practices of excessive force or discriminatory policing.

The decision came in the wake of protests and rioting in the eastern US city after Gray suffered a fatal injury while unrestrained in a police wagon and died on April 19.
