The United States has asked that Houthi rebels return property belonging to its embassy after cars were taken from the airport following the evacuation of US personnel.
"Upon our departure, our vehicles and equipment were seized, reportedly, by the Houthis. We are looking into this," State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters, late on Wednesday.
"Clearly, it is unacceptable, and we would reiterate that in order to return to Sana'a, respect for property, respect for our facilities is an essential component of that," she added. "We certainly are requesting they be returned." Reports also circulated that some Houthis entered the US embassy compound.
"In any of these circumstances, we expect the Houthis to respect international conventions that apply to our facilities, and we expect to be able to return to the embassy in the same condition," Psaki said.
"They've made public statements about how they have no desire to go after our interests, go after our materials. So, you know, we expect them to abide by their own statements." As to what other embassy will serve Americans in Yemen, she said the State Department is still "working through the question of a protecting power."
