Yehya Sinwar has been elected as Hamas group’s leader in the Gaza Strip, a Hamas official confirmed Monday. 

Sinwar, 55, will replace Ismail Haniyeh, who is running for the leadership of Hamas’s political bureau. 

Sinwar spent 22 years in Israeli prisons before being released in the 2011.
