A total of 225 lampposts have been installed on the outskirts of Sharjah, including Al Madam and Malaiha districts. The authority has used LED lights in the street lights to save power.

The lighting project is being carried out by the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) on the directives of His Highness, Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and Ruler of Sharjah, to provide best services for the residents and the citizen of the area.

Sewa used cables of up to 11,000 metres in the area and the project was completed in only two months.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr Rashid Alleem, Chairman of Sewa, said that the project also included installation of 75 lampposts in villages including Al Bahayes, bin Hassan on the outskirts of Al Madam.

He pointed out that Sewa is working on replacing all the streets lights with LED lights that will help in saving power.

"There is also plan to use solar lights in the streets," he said.

Khalifa Al Tunaiji, director of Sewa office in central areas, said that the execution of the project has helped in reducing traffic accidents that were caused due to poor visibility. He said the lights also contributed in beautifying the residential area and also ensuring safety and security for residents.

The lighting projects will be implemented in all emirates particularly on highways and residential areas.
