Eight Peshmerga soldiers were killed in Kirkuk early Friday after Kurdish forces launched a ground operation to recapture areas south of Kirkuk city.

Around 20 other soldiers were wounded in the face-off with militants, Kurdish sources said.

Secretary-General of the Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party Muhammad Haji Mahmoud was among the injured, the sources added.
