The High Elections Committee decided on Sunday to exclude Mubarak-era tycoon Ahmed Ezz, who was recently freed from jail over corruption charges, from running for parliament in the constituency of Sadat in Menoufiya.
Spokesman for the committee Omar Marwan said Ezz, who was the former secretary general of the dissolved National Democratic Party (NDP), was excluded for having no bank account specifically for his electoral campaign and for failure to submit his wife's financial disclosure form till now.
The committee requires from each candidate to open a new bank account specifically for the electoral campaign, and maintain transparency about transactions before the commission.
Ezz, the former owner of Ezz Steel - Egypt’s largest steel manufacturer - was jailed within days after a popular uprising that ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.
