Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb reiterated Al Azhar's support for the unity of the Lebanese people, hoping the current crisis will be solved peacefully in view of its long-standing coexistence history.
Tayyeb made the remarks during his meeting with visiting Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri at al Azhar headquarter on Monday.
"Lebanon is dear to Egyptians' hearts. Al Azhar has always been calling for the unity of the Lebanese people and highly appreciates the country as being a model of coexistence among different faiths," Tayyeb said.
For his part, speaker Berri expressed his appreciation for efforts exerted by the highest seat of Sunni Islam's and its chief in promoting peace and spreading the tolerant and moderate teachings of Islam.
He, meanwhile, underscored the time-honored role of Al Azhar in Lebanon through its expeditions and moderate scientists.
